3. READING SKILLS

 Reading is a basic life skill. The ability to read well ensures personal fulfilment. 

The Importance of Reading:

Reading is an important Receptive Skill. It helps to acquire knowledge of the world and that of a language. Reading is an opening to a wide variety of linguistic forms, new grammar and vocabulary. Reading develops imagination, entertains and plays a key role in socialization.

Developing Reading Readiness:

Pre- reading skills:

1. Learning the sounds of language.

2. Understanding the alphabetic principle - how letters represent sounds.

3. Listening to Oral language and Vocabulary.

4. Listening to others read.

Note: The right exposure, practice in the use of words and language , adequate cognitive (understanding) development, will help to acquire reading.

Methods of Learning Reading:

The Phonic Method stresses on letter- sound correspondence. This helps beginners understand how letters are linked to sounds (phonemes). Patterns of letter- sounds correspond to spelling. This knowledge is applied, to put sound to words. 

While Language Method: is a reading and learning method that trains to focus on words, sentences and paragraphs as a whole rather than just letters. Reading becomes fun. Motivation level is high 

Skills required for Reading:

  • Knowledge of basic sounds of a language
  • Fluency
  • Knowledge of vocabulary
  • Text comprehension
Accuracy and automaticity of reading serves as a bridge between decoding and comprehension.

Good reading comprehension depends on:
  • Skilled word recognition
  • Decoding
  • Oral reading fluency
  • Well developed vocabulary
  • Active engagement with the text
Reading difficulties:
Decoding- not having the ability to read words by translating symbols into sounds of spoken language.
Reading rate- not having the required speed in reading
Reading fluency -notable to maintain a regular flow when reading.
Reading Comprehension - poor understanding.

Causes for reading difficulty:
  • Improper word recognition skills.
  • Lacking fluency in language.
  • Imperfect understanding and reading experience.
  • Poor memory.
  • Insufficient exposure and practice.
  • Lack of awareness of text structure.
Strategies to overcome reading difficulties:
Repeated exposure to print improves various aspects of learning, increases speed and knowledge of words and facilities better reading comprehension.

Ways to acquire reading skills:
Some ways to learn the art of effective and intelligent reading:
  • Try to understand the meaning of new and unfamiliar words through the context.
  • Predict the subject matter of a given text from its title and other textual information.
  • Use previewing to find out what is given in a longer text.
  • Anticipate the arguments of the writer.
  • Use verbal and non- verbal information to comprehend or understand the text better.
  • Use intensive reading for accuracy.
  • Use extensive reading for fluency.
  • Skim the material to get an overview.
  • Scan the material for specific information.
  • Relate content to background knowledge.
  • Read in sense groups instead of word by word.
  • Use visual information ( graphs, charts, diagrams, etc,) to master reading.
What a good reader does:
  • Sorts material as important, interesting, unimportant.
  • Marks texts for memory wherever necessary.
  • Practises speed reading on a daily basis.
  • Adjusts speed to need.
  • Visualizes ideas.
  • Reads ideas not words.
  • Reads multi-word phrases.
  • Has a large vocabulary in that subject area.
Reading is the most effective activity to transform information into knowledge.
